A Morning to Invest In
On March 26, 2010, Integra’s Breakfast fundraising event returned to the Arcadian Court with keynote speaker John Tory and emcee Alison Smith, CBC News Senior Correspondent.
John Tory, the new chair of the Toronto City Summit Alliance, challenged the audience to broaden their scope of activism and take a deeper concern in our city.
He spoke of support for children with challenges and said, “. . . while you can’t cut a ribbon or put a plaque on it, if you look at an investment you might make in children with autism or children with learning disabilities, what better investment is there going to be than that? It’s easier to look at a building, it’s easier to put a sign on a building and point to it and say, this is what we’re doing with the money. But it sure does pay a big return to invest in a child.”
He truly captured the importance of Integra’s work and the need for attention to the cause of children’s mental health.
He then addressed certain issues that plague our city: the state of the economy and Torontonians’ social well-being; the widening of the gap between those who are comfortable and those who are marginalized; the sustainability of our decaying health care system and fixing the city’s finances.
Alison Smith kept the event moving with her wonderful sense of humour and colourful commentary. Overall, the event left the attendees pondering what they could contribute to their community.
Special thanks to our co-chairs Colleen Coman and Adrian Zenwirt for organizing Integra’s signature event which has been central to our fundraising activities for the last twelve years.
But most important of all, those of you who supported this event played a role in ensuring that Integra’s children and youth find the help they need in facing the challenges that learning disabilities bring to their mental health.
