The ONE Mark McEwan

The response to this year’s fundraising breakfast, Invest Now. Save a Future, has been very gratifying. People have especially commented on the warmth of the occasion and the ambience of the event. The lovely Arcadian Court set the stage for our keynote speaker, Mark McEwan, Chef Extraordinaire and Restaurateur – North 44, Bymark and ONE – and host of the Food Network’s The Heat - who regaled us with tales of events and influences that led him on the path toward gastronomic stardom.

Guests really sat up when he revealed that he will next go into the “grocery store” business. An excerpt from his speech: “Coming from a family that had a Lucky Dollar store in Mount Pleasant, Ontario, with a little butcher shop in the back . . . I’ve always wanted to have this big retail store, so we’ll open in October, the first one will be at Don Mills and Lawrence, and the plan is to build six of these in four years . . .”

Leading up to Mark’s keynote address were talks by a Camp Towhee counselor, Liz, and a camper, Andrew, who spoke movingly about what Integra’s help has meant to their lives.

Liz:

. . . Andrew brought to Towhee his unique attitude and spirit. After sharing so much with us, he left with a little piece of us all encompassed in his independence, strength, and empowerment. I find Camp Towhee to be a method of ‘pay it forward’ so to speak. An individual before Towhee, is never the same after. The fire that ignites within cannot be contained and Andrew and I are direct examples of this effect . . .

Andrew:

. . . Camp Towhee has taught me to take initiative and to take challenges head on . . . Every child and teenager has the potential of achieving greatness, confidence, leadership and above all reaching the goals they set for themselves. It takes a place like Towhee to teach a child how, and to bring them out of their shell . . .

No one has ever said it better.

Integra thanks Michael Harris, Integra’s Board President and our emcee for the morning, and John Madden who spoke on behalf of Scotia Capital, our lead sponsor. He and Colleen Coman of CIBC Mellon were the co-chairs of the event. Integra is truly grateful to all three of them for making it such a success.
