Integra's Community Consultation Program was established in 1994 to fulfill two important components of Integra’s mission and philosophy 1) promotion of a community-wide understanding of the mental health needs of children and adolescents who have learning disabilities and 2) improvement of community-based services for them and their families.
It is our belief that widespread understanding of learning disabilities contributes to healthier community environments for children and families.
The Community Consultation Program is primarily a program of prevention, delivered through public education and outreach. Individuals with learning disabilities are a population at risk for mental health problems. Through enhancing the knowledge base of the community at-large about learning disabilities, the program builds understanding and competence in caregivers and professionals who interact with this population.
The goals of the Community Consultation Program are designed to promote a "multiplier effect". Instead of devoting all resources to direct services for individual children, youth, and their families, the knowledge, skills and experience of Integra's staff are made available to professionals in other settings. This increases the number of clients who will eventually benefit.
The goals of the program are met through:
- the delivery of workshops and educational events about learning disabilities to the community-at-large
- development of community-based collaborative projects, to address the mental health of children and youth with learning disabilities
- creation of written material for parents, teachers and others interested in learning disabilities
